Dr Elgidius Ichumbaki (Ichu) is an archaeologist and heritage scholar with specific research interests in monumentality, spirituality, coastal societies, community archaeology, public archaeology, maritime archaeology and the development of innovative techniques for the survey and presentation of heritage sites. He is the Director of Urithi Wetu and Senior Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam. He has directed research projects in Tanzania for nearly a decade now. Recently Ichu was part of the UNESCO delegation at the workshop ‘World Heritage and Educational Institutions in Africa’ supporting the implementation of World Heritage Convention where he presented on the "Heritage curriculum in African higher learning institutions". Ichu is the Principal Investigator (PI) and he has overall responsibility for pulling the strands of all the Urithi Wetu members together and ensuring that all project outcomes are delivered. His scoping work focuses on applications of heritage in a wider developmental context.
