Dr. Elinaza Mjema is an archaeologist with research interest on using archaeological approaches to understand the genesis, change and continuity of maritime communities on the western coast of Indian Ocean. While teaching at the University of Dar es Salaam, he has been running field schools with archaeology students since 2010. He conducted his PhD research at Pangani Bay focusing on 8th to 15th centuries AD Swahili archaeology. As a collaborator in Urithi Wetu project, Dr. Elinaza investigates the maritime and underwater cultural heritage of the Swahili coast in Tanzania. He also runs his own research project which seeks to investigate the archaeology of colonial encounters on the Tanzania coast from 16th to 19th centuries AD.
